Calcpad: An Indispensable Tool for Electrical Engineering Calculations and Documentation ⚡

As an engineer or technician, you’re often faced with the challenge of performing calculations, documenting them properly, and providing results in a format that’s both long-term accessible and flexible to use.
This was my experience as well when I started working independently and had to carry out calculations for my clients’ documentation. At that time, I was already familiar with common programs like Excel or Mathcad, which, while useful, have their limitations in terms of readability and exportability.
I also did a lot of calculations on my trusty calculator (shoutout to all the Casio FX-991 users out there!), but the effort of documenting everything and the potential for errors was just too high.

I mainly use Calcpad for relatively simple calculations, but the tool is also capable of handling highly complex ones. There are virtually no limits, and new features are constantly being added.

One of Calcpad’s biggest advantages is its seamless integration of text and calculations. I use it to create technical descriptions of devices, perform necessary calculations for component utilization or output parameters, and document proof of intrinsic safety.
What’s particularly important to me:
- Open Source and Free: Calcpad is freely available and requires no expensive licenses.
- Future-Proof: Calculations can be exported as Word formulas, ensuring long-term reusability since Word is essentially a standard. My clients don’t need to use the program themselves—they simply receive the results in Word format.

Calcpad automatically updates calculations when component values or parameters are changed, effectively avoiding errors. This ensures high accuracy and saves valuable time. And let’s be honest—changes are a part of every developer’s life!

Even if you’re unable to install software on your computer, Calcpad offers a web-based version. This makes it incredibly flexible and accessible—no matter where you’re working.

Unlike bloated tools like Excel, MATLAB, or Mathcad, Calcpad focuses on the essentials. Its intuitive operation and clear structure make it easy to start right away without getting lost in complex menus.
Practical Applications in My Workflow 🔄
- Setting Parameters: I begin by creating a Calcpad file where I define all relevant parameters, such as ambient temperature, temperature classes, or gas and dust groups.
- Performing Calculations: Using Calcpad’s simple syntax, I can perform quick and precise calculations. Results are automatically displayed on the right-hand side of the window in the desired units.
- Export to Word: Once the calculations are complete, I export them as Word formulas. I prefer the “Pro” format, which uses fraction bars for a polished look. I then copy the generated Word content into my technical documentation or reports.
- Enhanced Presentation: For those who want to elevate their documents, Calcpad allows the use of HTML and CSS to enhance presentation. Additionally, results can be exported as PDFs. However, I personally prefer Word for its long-term flexibility.
- Making Changes: If I discover an error, I correct it in Calcpad and export the updated calculations to Word. This ensures that all affected calculations are updated without missing anything.

Calcpad Compared to Other Tools 🌐
Unlike major programs like MATLAB, Mathematica, or Excel, Calcpad is intentionally minimalistic. It provides exactly the features needed for technical calculations and documentation—nothing more, nothing less.
It’s free, open-source, and doesn’t even require installation.
